A full ERP project sounds like a mountain: every department, every sheet, every habit, all at once. That is why many colleges delay it for years. A modular ERP removes the mountain. You climb it one module at a time.
Why start with one module?
- Lower risk. A problem in one area does not stop the whole college.
- Faster benefit. You fix the most painful problem first.
- Easier training. One group of staff learns at a time.
- Better decisions. You judge the product on a real module before committing further.
Which module should come first?
Start where the pain is greatest. As a guide:
| If your biggest pain is | Consider starting with |
|---|---|
| Fee receipts that do not match the books | Fees and accounts |
| Admissions chaos at peak season | Admissions |
| Payroll errors and leave disputes | HR and payroll |
| Student data scattered across sheets | Student records |
| Missing or unaccounted books | Library |
Is there a sensible order?
Yes. When we move a college onto Tuling, we usually begin with staff and payroll and finish with accounts. Staff and payroll are the most regulated and the most visible, so they benefit most from careful checking. Accounts come last because they depend on what feeds into them. The student-facing modules go in between, in an order that suits your academic calendar.
What makes modules fit together?
Two things.
- One record per person. A student or staff member is entered once, and every module uses the same record.
- Connections you do not have to build. When you add the next module, it picks up what is already there.
Ask the vendor to show what happens when a second module is added: does the data come with it, or does someone re-enter it?
How do you make each module safe to adopt?
Use the same simple pattern every time.
- Bring in your data from your existing sheets.
- Test it on real data before anyone depends on it.
- Run in parallel. Use the old way and the new way side by side for a while, and compare the numbers.
- Switch when the numbers match.
Our own plan takes about five months when data is clean and policies are standard, and up to six when there is cleaning or custom setup first. See the full moving to Tuling plan.
What are the traps?
- A different system for each module, which then do not connect
- Starting with the hardest module, when a smaller one would build confidence
- Skipping the parallel run, and finding differences after the old way is gone
- No owner per module, so decisions stall
How does Tuling support this?
Tuling’s products can run on their own and connect when you use them together: Admissions, Financials, HCM, SIS, Library and more. See how they connect in our college management suite, or read how to choose college ERP software.

Frequently asked questions
What is a modular college ERP?
It is a college ERP made of separate modules, such as admissions, fees, student records, HR and library, that you can adopt one at a time and that connect when used together.
Which module should a college start with?
Start with the one that causes the most daily pain. Many colleges begin with fees or HR and payroll, and add admissions and student records afterwards.
How long does it take to adopt a module?
It depends on your data and policies. With clean data and standard policies, a full move can take about five months, and up to six when there is cleaning or custom setup first.
Will adding modules later mean re-entering data?
It should not. Ask the vendor how the student and staff records carry forward from one module to the next.
